Robyn Wallace, Trustee and chair of the Māori komiti

Robyn Wallace, Rātā Foundation Trustee and Chair of the Māori Komiti, talks about the steps the philanthropic organisation has taken to build a stronger relationship with Māori.

She says the kaimahi at Rātā Foundation have been on a journey of māramatanga in an effort to understand and respond to the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi.

Rātā partnered with Ihi Research to better understand how to engage and build strong relationships with Māori.

“Rātā Foundation has already taken some important steps as a direct result of the research outcomes from Ihi Research. We now have a focus and a way forward for our Māori Engagement Advisor and the Māori Komiti,” she says.

“The work we are doing includes building our internal cultural competency to engage with kaupapa Māori organisations. We are also working towards a process to ensure the whānau we work with are supported and have equitable access to our funding.”

She says a key part of the learning process was to work with Māori in a more partnership-focused way.

“We want to walk beside whānau, hapū and iwi, to enable them to be strengths-based, aspirational and consistent with their intergenerational focus,” she says.

“An example of this is our partnership in the RUIA fund, which will support rangatahi-focused initiatives.”

RUIA is a unique partnership between three South Island organisations, Te Putahitanga, Ngāi Tahu and Rātā Foundation, who have created this dedicated fund to support rangatahi wellbeing, inter-generational leadership, succession planning and cultural development.

“Rātā Foundation will continue to grow and learn through this journey of understanding, so future generations of tamariki and rangitahi are supported and sustained.

“Rātā Foundation is committed to working with Māori to gain an understanding of their aspirations, and to support them in achieving their goals.”
