Athletics Canterbury enter a 'new era'

Athletics Canterbury is in a ‘new era in athletics’ as they mark a year at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.

Athletics Canterbury found a permanent home in the state-of-the-art sports facility at the end of 2018.

The organisation encourages people of all ages to participate in sport and connect with others who share the same passion.

Athletics Canterbury Board President Andrew Stark says the organisation aims to improve fitness, health and wellbeing, and foster skill development within the sporting community.

“Athletics provides a plethora of opportunities for leadership and for local volunteering through our many structured and unstructured events,” he says.

“It’s not just about the sport, but about connecting the community and putting a focus on making healthy choices so people can thrive in all areas of their life.”

He says moving their organisation into Ngā Puna Wai has launched Athletics Canterbury into a new era.

“For years we have had our track and field athletes running on the grass at Rawhiti Domain, which wasn’t ideal. Ngā Puna Wai is such a valuable asset and has seen us become more professional in how we operate.”

Funding from Rātā Foundation under the Participate priority area has allowed Athletics Canterbury to hire a General Manager who aims to connect and collaborate with different organisations, oversee strategic planning and ensure the growth of the sport.

“The General Manager has been influential in cementing our sport at Nga Puna Wai and providing a central point to celebrate the past and future successes of the sport,” he says.

“With this operational support, the various committees are able to modernize the sport through promotion and funding opportunities thus providing opportunities for athletes, coaches and officials.”
